Men's Activities From construction to cooking to music, community outreach to committee leadership, Morrow provides an abundance of activities for men. The Pied Pipers: Cooking up Outreach
The Pied Pipers started in January of 2007 with the purpose of cooking homemade meals for Morrow members in need. Acting as an outreach program for the United Methodist Men organization, the Pipers group has steadily grown to 15 men, who enjoy socializing while preparing and delivering delicious meals to individuals in the community. Each member of the group is responsible for managing a cooking event at his house, which usually occurs on the first Sunday of the month. The designated Pied Piper selects a recipe, purchases ingredients, as well as plans the entire meal. In addition, he serves as a social host to all members of the Pied Pipers who come to his house to help cook. The following week, two or three Pipers identify Morrow members, through hardship, who have expressed interest in having a meal delivered to their home. Of course, the recipients' needs vary. We have delivered dinners to individuals who have recently come out of the hospital, as well as to expectant at-home mothers who simply need “time off” from their hectic responsibilities.
Meal Description: During the last year, the Pied Pipers have prepared and delivered over 200 individual dinners, and the need continues to grow. For example, we have prepared, cooked and delivered the following dinners: Shepherd’s Pie, Spanish Chicken with Peppers, Winter Beef Casserole, Western Chicken Pie, Chili Muey Bueno, Chicken salad, Western Meatloaf, Danish Cucumber Salad, Swedish Meatballs, Grilled Chicken Delight, Shrimp and Sausage Casserole, and New Orleans Okra Gumbo (just to name a few). We have also found success in delivering special dessert “comfort foods," such as apple pies, peach pies, brownies, date bread, banana bread and even powdered sugar rum balls!Community and Member Response: Our goal is to deliver food within two days after we cook it. This is to insure that the dinners are fresh and recipients' needs are met quickly. We have received numerous letters thanking us for our efforts. One Morrow member wrote, “Thank you for thinking of my family in our hour of need. Your dinner was delicious and much appreciated”. Another wrote, “I didn’t realize that Morrow had such a fine group of first class cooks. Maybe the women can learn a thing or two from you guys”.
As a secondary goal the Pied Pipers serves a social function offering an opportunity for Morrow men to come together to share thoughts and feelings on a variety of topics in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. As one Piper put it, “Joining the Pied Pipers is fulfilling and informative. We have fun schmoozing and at the same time providing edible meals for Morrow folks who need a friendly offering. It’s a win-win situation.Membership Contact: Any male Morrow member who wants to enjoy fellowship while learning about how to cook (we do learn a lot from each other) can contact Duncan Ewald at getewald@yahoo.com. We generally meet the first Sunday of each month at 7pm at the designated cooking manager’s house for that month. Bring a spatula and an open mind for what will be a very entertaining evening.
In addition, if you would like to receive one of our meals, contact us and tell us what you enjoy eating, and we will do our best to delight your taste buds!
